5 Ways to Relieve Wedding Planning Stress

November 9, 2021

If we’re being honest, even the most laid-back couples feel overwhelmed at times during the wedding planning process. Large weddings, intimate ceremonies, and elopements alike come with their own set of stressors. Invitation deadlines, unique pandemic airline situations, and backup weather plans can add to the stress of wedding planning.

But, after photographing weddings for years, I can assure you there’s no need to panic. Your loved ones (and your wedding photographer) want the very best for your big day, and we’re here for you with helping hands and creative solutions to ensure you have a truly magical day, one way or another. And remember, this is a celebration of your marriage and commitment. As long as you’ve got each other, rain or shine, it’s gonna be amazing! Even if something doesn’t go exactly as planned along the way.

So, when you feel a bit of wedding planning anxiety creeping in, try one of these stress-relieving tips to calm you down so you can have fun and enjoy the process—even in the month leading up to the big day!

5 Fun Ways to Avoid the Stress of Wedding Planning

While taking time for a spa day or taking a walk around the block can certainly help relieve stress, sometimes doing nothing or trying to rest just makes your mind wander even more to your growing to-do list. If you’re not finding the peace and calm you hoped for, consider a few unconventional stress-relieving activities:

1. Plan a date night—and DON’T talk about the wedding.

Take it back to where it all began with two best friends falling in love. Whether you go to the movies, a concert, or maybe a vineyard tour and wine tasting, go with zero expectations other than to enjoy each other’s company. Make a rule that you will not discuss wedding planning! Instead, chat about your goals and dreams or talk about where you want to travel together. Take some time to go deeper in your relationship together. Not sure where to start? Try {The And} Couples Edition game. Or, go light and romantic with this version of Truth or Dare for Couples.

2. Get Your Adrenaline Pumping

Redirect the anxiety and get some feel-good endorphins pumping instead. Get together with your boo or group of friends and get your heart racing—in a good way. It’ll take your mind off the plans for a bit.

Try:

  • Ax Throwing
  • Laser Tag
  • Escape Room
  • Indoor Sky Diving
  • Indoor Rock Climbing
  • Indoor/Outdoor Ropes Course
  • Indoor/Outdoor Shooting Range

3. Get Outside

Nature has a way of calming nerves and helping you refocus and breathe.

Enjoy some fresh air with one of these activities:

  • Stand Up Paddle/Kayaking
  • Fishing
  • Hiking
  • Nature Watching
  • Picnic at the Park
  • Camping
  • Jogging
  • Biking/Cycling
  • Dog Walking

4. Make Time for Things You Love

It may not seem like you have extra room in your schedule right now, but don’t neglect your passions and hobbies. Sure, you may have to cut back a little, but don’t cut them out entirely. Not only will a hobby help you unwind a bit, it’ll also help you reset so that you can get back at it more efficiently.

Not sure if you have a hobby? Try one of these (sign up for a class if you’re a newbie to the craft)!

  • Paint/Draw
  • Listen to Music
  • Read a Book (for fun!)
  • Craft/Decorate
  • Learn Calligraphy/Watercolor Painting
  • Knit/Crochet
  • Pottery/Sculpting
  • Baking/Pastry Decorating
  • Cooking
  • Gardening
  • Yoga/Dance/Pilates
  • Scrapbooking

5. Focus on What’s Most Important

Ultimately, the best way to fend off anxiety is to remember why you’re doing this in the first place—to celebrate your love! Take it all one step at a time and enjoy the ride. Laugh at the bloopers along the way. Everyone has them. And you’ll remember those good times together in the months leading up to the big day way more than you’ll remember a little missed detail! If something just isn’t working out, don’t force it and pick a simpler option or solution and move on. No one will ever know! I’ve walked this exciting journey with many couples, and I’m happy to support you and provide insight when you need it! You’ve got this!
