The great thing about engagement photos is that you have lots of flexibility! The hard thing about engagement photos is that you have lots of flexibility… But we’re here to help you plan and design an engagement session that authentically reflects you. Need help selecting your photo locations? Start with this engagement photo location guide by the Wilmington NC photographers at Dawn Marie Photo:

How to Choose Engagement Photo Locations | Wilmington NC Photographers | Oak Island

Choose a familiar or meaningful location.

Consider places you frequently visit, such as the park near your home or a local shop you both enjoy. Maybe you’d like a location that represents a shared hobby, like a record shop or music store. Choosing a location you’re familiar with can help you relax if don’t like feeling out of place, and it also adds personality to your photos. You can let loose, be yourself, and have fun being in your element. This couple feels right at home on Oak Island near Wilmington, NC. The nautical ambiance worked well for their engagement session with their pups.

Book an in-home engagement session.

What vibe are you going for in your engagement photos? Hitting the trail and scoping out scenic backdrops isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Instead, try an intimate and romantic in-home lifestyle engagement session. Picture all the cozy couch cuddles, baking cookies, s’mores by the fire, or movie night with popcorn. You could even throw in a pillow fight if that’s your thing. It might sound silly, but it’s really a sweet and fun way to document this first chapter of your story together.

Try an every-day activity or go on an adventure!

What do you enjoy doing together on your free time? Or what have you always wanted to try? Bring along your four-legged friend like these two did for their Oak Island, NC engagement session. We could also go fishing, kayaking, or hiking. Adventurous experiences always lend themselves to great photos because you’re focused on each other and the task at hand more than the camera. You could even try a new experience (don’t judge me that ax throwing comes to mind—I’ve always wanted to try that!) Maybe you want toyou’re your hand at stand-up paddling—hop on your boards and let’s go! Explore and have fun.

(Don’t worry if the photo locations you have in mind isn’t on our website or galleries. We love shooting at new locations because we can get creative and try new backdrops with you—a completely tailored engagement session for you!)

Share expectations with your photographer.

Share your plans for your photos if you have specific requests so we can recommend locations, angles, and poses for the shots we need. For instance, let us know what you have in mind for save the dates, wall art, or other displays before your session.

Prepare ahead of time.

Block out most of your day for the session so you can mentally prepare and not feel rushed or stressed. (As you might imagine, being cranky with your other half makes engagement sessions trickier.) Plan extra buffer time for hair, makeup, getting ready, and traveling to your locations. Think of it as a day date, turn on your favorite playlist, and get in model mode! 😉

Focus on each other.

Pinterest and Instagram algorithms have probably caught on that you’re engaged, and now your feeds are full of engagement photo locations, posing suggestions, props, and outfits, which can all be helpful as we plan together. However, don’t feel like you have to have each of those elements nailed down (minus the outfits—you need those). I’m here to guide your poses, style the session, and find just the right lighting for you. All you need to do is enjoy the moment and stay focused on each other. Simply relax and enjoy each other’s company as you would on any other date.. If you see a trail you’ve never explored, go for it! I’m along for the ride (and sure to get your best side while we’re at it).

And finally…It’s ok to be awkward!

We’re here to help you feel comfortable and make you laugh. Go with the flow and don’t be afraid to look silly. Trust us, it’s actually super cute!
